Do I need planning permission for a shipping container?

This is a grey area and depends on many factors such as:

  • Local authorities attitude.
  • Where the container is placed.
  • How long the container is being left for.
  • What it looks like - clean and tidy or an older unit which is scruffy.
  • Your neighbours or public within the area.

If in doubt ask your Local Authority Planning office. If your reason for using a container is genuine and it is not going to be a permanent fixture they are, nowadays, a lot more relaxed about they’re use - most councils use them themselves.

But simply plonking it on the highway or your front garden is not a good idea! See www.tagish.co.uk/links/localgov.htm - this web site offers listing of all local government offices details.
